Local Information

Braes Retreat is ideally situated on Skye, being perfectly tranquil due to being so close to the end of the no through road and yet only 15 minutes drive to Portree, the capital of the Isle of Skye, which is central for exploring the rest of the island.

The Braes

Historically the district of Braes is probably best known for the Battle of the Braes in 1882 when the local crofting families fought against 60 policemen (50 sent from Glasgow) for their grazing rights.

Fortunately, this battle helped to establish the Crofters’ Holding Act of 1886 and therefore you can be sure to enjoy a peaceful holiday in the area now!

The area offers the opportunity for some lovely walks or strolls along the various beaches including a beautiful sandy beach just a short walk from Braes Retreat, looking north to the spectacular shape of Ben Tianavaig.

Wildlife is in abundance in the area and we have been lucky enough to see dolphins, otters, seals and sea eagles for ourselves.

Portree Harbour

Portree

The nearest shops, restaurants and pubs can be found in Portree, just 15 minutes drive from Braes Retreat.

Portree has the best choice on the island in terms of dining or entertainment as well as two supermarkets and a number of banks.

It is a picturesque and charming place, which also has a number of facilities including the Aros Centre, (http://www.aros.co.uk), which holds various concerts throughout the year.

The Isle of Skye

The vast range of both natural and “man-made” attractions on Skye is far too great to be mentioned here, however, there is plenty of information provided at Braes Retreat for you to plan your excursions.

Walking and climbing at various levels are obviously synonymous with Skye; Skye walks (http://www.skyewalk.co.uk) gives a flavour for the variety of walks on offer.

There are also plentiful tourist attractions such as castles, museums, ruins and local craft establishments as well as the very popular Talisker Distillery.
